What’s your AuditMindset?

What’s your AuditMindset?

I often see three types of organisation cultures at audit time :

•    Get them in and get them out
•    Hide everything
•    We are ready

Your organisation mindset to audit is usually determined by:

•    How much value you see in audit?
•    How prepared you are?
•    How good your internal audits are?

Ask yourself - how do people feel about audit in your organisation?

Get them in and get them out

This is a common mindset I see in organisations when the auditors are scheduled.

In this scenario organisations want to get the auditor out as quickly as possible, either because they don’t see the value of the audit and feel it’s a waste of time and resources, or perhaps because they are afraid of what the auditor might find if they have time to look.

Organisations looking to get the auditor out quickly will often work  hard to make it as easy for them as possible on the day of audit, providing lots of evidence folders to keep the auditor busy.

Evidence folders are labelled against the criteria of the standards so that they have a clear piece of evidence to record against each criteria.

Every effort is made to show just enough to satisfy without sparking any desire to look further.

Ask yourself - have you been guilty of this mindset?

The good news is that there is another way.

You don't need to fear audit, if you have an AUDITMINDSET you will always feel ready.

Hide everything - the auditors are coming

We adopt this hide everything mindset when we want to cover up the gaps.

This mindset can be bred out of fear.

We don't think we meet the standards and start to panic.

It can be a sign that your own internal audits are not effective or worse, not happening.
When you have good internal audits you rarely feel the need to hide your gaps.

Have you ever been told or tempted to hide the evidence?

We are ready - the AuditMindset to strive for

The we are ready mindset isn't about feeling you are perfect but rather confident that you have done everything you can to prepare and feel that you are in a good position.

You may even welcome the fresh set of eyes to help you with further improvements.

These organisations usually have one thing in common.... regular and effective internal audits.

Internal audit is a great risk control.
