AuditMindset – the new way forward for internal monitoring.

Recently I wrote about the difference between compliance and quality, one is about doing just enough (compliance) and one about doing more (quality).

The same can be said for internal and external audit.

✔️ Internal audit is about quality, it’s about being better.

❌ External audit is about compliance – it’s about doing enough to pass.

What if I told you there is a third way?

I call it AuditMindset and there are considerable benefits of adopting this approach across your organisation.

Turn your team into auditors without the cost.

Many organisations assign audits to people without providing any training or experience and wonder why there are non-conformance.

Internal audit is a great way of understanding how your systems are performing but not everyone makes a great auditor.

When you don't have a team of experienced auditors it’s tempting to create checklists or audit tools so that you can hand these to anyone on the team to complete, but this rarely provides consistent and valid information.

What if I told you there is another way?

By building an AuditMindset you can remove the need for checklists and create an environment where everyone is looking for evidence of quality and are open to raising opportunities for improvement.

Double the audits with half the effort.

When we audit, we usually have one person looking at a system at a set point in time.

Time is made, a plan is written, and the audit happens.

It’s resource-intensive and people doing the audit have different levels of skills and interest in the process.

Sometimes audits just aren't a priority.

The main problem though is that depending on the size of the audit team you may have one person looking at all systems across the organisation.

That’s one set of eyes.

When you develop an AuditMindset across the organisation you have many sets of eyes looking at all of your systems all of the time.

You really can double the audits with half the effort

When you develop an AuditMindset you don’t need to allocate people to be internal auditors and that’s good news because research shows people don't want to be internal auditors.

AuditMindset – the difference between looking and seeing.

AuditMindset is not the traditional internal audit process, which can be expensive in both time and money.

One of the biggest positive change’s organisation sees when they implement an AuditMindset is that people move from looking to seeing what is really happening at work.

Its’ the difference between:

Walking past the boxes stacked against the emergency exit and stopping to help move them.
Checking the procedure before making a decision if you’re not sure so that risks are managed.
Fixing a problem in your team and working collaboratively to fix it, across the whole organisation.

To see whether developing an AuditMindset is right for your organisation to ask yourself the following questions:

How involved are you in internal audit at work?
Do you have trained auditors at work?
How much time do you spend on internal audits at work? Too much or not enough?
Are you looking at work or seeing?
